How to fit a photo within 500 KB
- Open the photo you want to share or publish.
- Keep the 500 KB ceiling, choose JPG or WebP, and select whether smaller dimensions are allowed.
- Compress, compare the original and output sizes, and download the verified result.
Example
A multi-megabyte camera photo → a JPG or WebP no larger than 500,000 bytes. A modest image may fit without changing its dimensions.
When to use this tool
Use this for photo attachments, product images or CMS fields with a stated 500 KB limit. It is a file budget, not a guarantee of any platform’s acceptance or of photographic quality.
Supported formats & limits
One static image at a time, up to 20 MiB and 24 megapixels. Lower device limits are shown in the workspace. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC/HEIF inputs are supported where the local decoder is available. Output is JPG or WebP. KB means 1,000 bytes. EXIF/GPS metadata is removed; animated images are unsupported.
Something isn’t working ↗Good to know
Is 500 KB the same as 0.5 MB?
With decimal units, yes: both mean 500,000 bytes. The result displays the exact bytes as well as a readable size.
Will a smaller source file be enlarged to 500 KB?
The tool never adds padding to reach the budget. Re-encoding can sometimes increase an already efficient source, so compare the original and output sizes before downloading.
Does it keep all metadata?
No. The output removes EXIF/GPS metadata. Color profiles, HDR and high bit depths are not preserved exactly by browser re-encoding.
Are photos sent to a server for compression?
No. Decoding, quality search, resizing and encoding run in your browser. Your image is not uploaded for processing.
