Estimate reading and speaking time from a word count

A word-based estimate is a planning aid for an article, voice-over or presentation. It does not measure how long an individual reader or speaker will actually take.

The calculation is words divided by pace

JustToolset divides its word count by the selected words-per-minute value. The default reading pace is 200 and the default speaking pace is 130. These are editable starting values, not an assessment of your reading ability or a guarantee of presentation length.

Calibrate with your own sample

Read a representative passage aloud while timing yourself. Divide its word count by the elapsed minutes and use that pace for a first estimate. Choose a passage with a similar density of names, technical terms and numbers to the full script.

  1. Paste the material you will actually read, excluding private speaker notes if they will not be spoken.
  2. Set the reading or speaking pace from your own timed sample.
  3. Add planned pauses and rehearse the full presentation with slides or demonstrations.

Allow for material the counter cannot time

Images, questions, audience responses and demonstrations take time without adding many words. A five-minute word estimate can therefore become a much longer talk. For a fixed slot, reserve that time before choosing a script length. The underlying word count uses browser language-aware segmentation.
